Pricing your work

© Roydon Art Exhibition 2010 - 2024

If you really want your works to be sold they must be priced realistically. Whilst we recognise the huge amount of work that artists put into their pictures, pricing them to take into account the hours spent on them, together with the cost of the materials and the frame/mount etc, will mean they will almost certainly be too expensive.

The average price of the approximately 300 pictures exhibited in 2025 was £125. The average price of the approximately 40 pictures sold was £95. The most expensive picture sold was £250 with the cheapest at £5. The majority of pictures sold were priced between £70 and £125. Only a few are sold above £200.

Framing. There are no hard and fast rules about framing your work as it's largely a matter of taste, but a little time considering the frame and mount may help your picture sell. A poor frame could detract from the picture, make it less attractive and therefore harder to sell. It's true, a purchaser could re-frame a picture, but that will increase the overall cost of the piece.

Consider where the picture might eventually be hung. If the work is clearly intended for a child's bedroom, a heavy matt black frame is probably not the best choice. A well chosen frame and mount will enhance the picture and therefore making it more attractive to a wouldbe purchaser, however that will increase the cost to the artist. How much of that increased cost can be passed on the the purchaser is debatable.

For smallish pictures, there are many excellent frames available 'off the shelf' but they tend to be specific sizes (eg A4) so unless you are going to limit yourself to a single size, that may not be the way forward.
